Deadly Ambush in Ada County Leaves Two Dead, Authorities Say
Boise, Idaho — Two people are dead after a gunman opened fire on firefighters who were responding to a brush fire in rural Ada County on Saturday, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. local time near the foothills north of Eagle, where local fire crews were called to contain a fast-moving brush fire amid dry, windy conditions. As firefighters began operations, a man allegedly ambushed the crew with gunfire, fatally striking two individuals. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of family members.
Suspect in Custody, Investigation Underway
The suspected shooter was apprehended at the scene without further incident, authorities said. The Ada County Sheriff’s Office, working in coordination with state police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is investigating the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Early reports indicate the suspect may have been hiding in nearby brush before launching the attack.
“This is a tragic day for our community and for those who risk their lives to protect us,” Sheriff Matt Clifford said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of the victims.”
Firefighter Safety Concerns Grow
Wildland firefighting agencies across the western United States have expressed concern over increasing threats to first responders, particularly as the 2025 wildfire season intensifies. The National Interagency Fire Center, based in Boise, has noted a rise in dangerous encounters between emergency crews and armed individuals in recent years.
The brush fire was contained within an hour, and no additional injuries were reported among fire or law enforcement personnel. Authorities have not released a possible motive for the attack and said the investigation is ongoing. Residents in the area were briefly evacuated as a precaution but were allowed to return home by Saturday evening.
Community Response and Support
Local and state officials have called for a moment of solidarity in support of emergency responders. Governor Brad Little ordered flags to be flown at half-staff throughout Idaho in honor of the victims. Counseling and support services are being made available to affected first responders and their families.
- The names of the deceased will be released once next of kin have been notified.
